The History of Ilkeston by Stephen Glover transcribed by C A Graeme Webster

Price: £10.00

Stephen Glover is best known for his History, Gazetteer and Directory of Derbyshire. Two volumes were published in 1829 and 1831 but the later ones never appeared. However, he left five notebooks, now archived in the Derby Museum and Art Gallery, that contained material for these later volumes. A transcription of these notebooks was published by his great, great, great grandson in 2017, however, pages 35 to 38 of notebook 4 were missing. The pages were lost but, fortunately, formed part of Glover’s History of Ilkeston which was intended to be sold at the Ilkeston Spa Baths (opened in 1831). As well as the Ilkeston material, this book contains a detailed history of the Manners family, a newly written section on Shipley plus pedigrees for the Manners and Mundy families. This new translation has been completely retyped and also adds a description of the origin and later development of the Baths, as well as a biography of Stephen Glover.
